The Many Uses of Burlap

I LOVE burlap! Burlap is a very versatile fabric that can add dimension, texture and interest to your space. This fabric has gained popularity since the days when it was only used as grain and coffee sacks (even though we love those too). It can now be seen as furniture upholstery, table linens, accent bedding, and drapery fabrics. The great thing about burlap is that is can be added to any space no matter what the style or decor. It goes well with fun and funky fabrics as well as traditional silks. The best thing about burlap is that it is cheap, cheap, cheap! It can be found for as low as $1.50 a yard!!! At that price, it's a trend you can easily incorporate into any space.As an interior designer I love to use burlap in my designs. It is inexpensive and it adds such a nice texture to your design. It is also so, French! Below are some of my favorite uses of burlap.

Using it on a bulletin board is such an easy way to incorporate it into your interiors. These bulletin boards are from ballard designs but you can easily make these yourself. Buy and inexpensive bulletin board from your local craft store and just staple gun the fabric around it. I always put fabric around my bulletin boards. This one has an extra element of some upholstery tacks.

These drapes are also from Ballard Designs. I have used these in many of my clients homes. They again add an unexpected element to your design.

You can upholster funiture with burlap as well. This chair would be so cute if you stenciled the initial of your last name right in the center of the back. OOOOOH so Chic!

The one thing you do need to remember about burlap is that it is a natural fiber. Before you make a commitment to anything, I would recommend you going to your local fabric store and buying a yard of it and making sure you don't mind the texture of it.

Personalize a store-bought candle for an inexpensive Christmas gift. Simply wrap cardstock around the candle, and embellish it with a die-cut accent and letter. No die-cutting tool? No problem -- use stickers instead. These candles can be picked up at any dollar store. What a great girlfriend gift!

Glass paperweights decorated for the holidays make practical and gender-neutral gifts -- ideal for coworkers and teachers. The simple project starts with a glass paperweight kit, available at crafts and hobby stores or online. Decorate the paperweight with scrapbook paper, gift wrap, or an old Christmas Card.

This pretty-as-a-package pincushion is the perfect gift for a crafty friend. Cover a foam square with fabric (wrap it like a gift) and secure along the edges with fabrics glue. Glue on beads and tie on a ribbon bow.

It takes only a few minutes and some embroidery floss to make these cute napkins!

Lovely Fall Tablescapes

Now that I am feeling so "fall" the interior designer is coming out and I feel the need to decorate my table with a fall tablescape. This is such an easy way to bring the feeling of autumn to the inside of your home. Here are some great ideas.

I love the idea of squash filled with candy corn. You could arrange these in a wooden tray with some moss on the bottom to add some texture.

These white rectangular plates are so easy to find. I see them at Target all the time. Fill them with miniature pumpkins and then scatter some yellow and orange mums on them. Cut the mums all the way down so that only about 1/2" of the stem are showing.

Go outside and bring in some branches with brightly colored leaves. Use them to fill large glass vases. You can even fill the vase with a few inches of acorns or pecans to add some texture to the arrangement.

Yummy Apple Cider

Try one of these yummy apple cider's on a cold winter night! Better yet pair them with a roaring fire and you'll have a perfect winter evening.

Creamy Apple Cider

Hot Cider Nog: Whisk together 2 cups half-and-half, 1 cup each milk and apple cider, 2 large eggs, 1⁄2 cup sugar, 1⁄4 tsp. ground cinnamon, and 1⁄8 tsp. each salt and ground nutmeg in a heavy saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, whisking constantly, 15 to 20 minutes or until mixture thickens and coats a spoon. Remove from heat; stir in 1⁄2 cup bourbon, if desired. Top each serving with sweetened whipped cream. Garnish with cinnamon sticks, ground cinnamon, and apple slices, if desired. Makes: 5 1⁄2 cups

Mulled Apple Cider

Cider Tea: Place 6 regular-size hibiscus tea bags and 2 1⁄2 cups water in a medium saucepan; bring to a boil. Boil, uncovered, until liquid is reduced to 2 cups. Remove tea bags, and stir in 4 each whole allspice and cloves and 2 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks. Let cool about 1 hour; chill 1 hour. Discard solids. Cook tea mixture and 6 cups apple cider in a large saucepan over medium heat until thoroughly heated. Note: We tested with Celestial Seasonings Red Zinger Herbal Tea. Makes: 8 cups

Spiked Apple Cider

Rum Cider Tea: Prepare Cider Tea as directed, stirring 1 cup spiced rum into cider mixture in saucepan. Makes: 9 cups
Bourbon Cider Sour: Stir together 3⁄4 cup each bourbon and apple cider, 1⁄2 cup orange juice, and 1⁄4 cup sugar. Serve over finely crushed ice. Makes: 2 1⁄3 cups

Chic Wall Storage Idea

It is that time of year, jackets, gloves, scarves and boots will need to find a nice home when they walk in the door. How about transforming an ordinary hardware store find into a functional piece of art!

1. Purchase two, four-foot-tall cardboard tubes, one measuring 10 inches wide and the other 12 inches wide. Use a jigsaw to cut each tube into smaller tubes of varying heights (refer to the photo at left for guidance).

2. Cover the outside of each smaller tube with contact paper. Cut away any excess paper with a utility knife.

3. Arrange the tubes on the floor as you'd like them to hang. Wherever two meet, use an awl to poke a hole through both. Slide a no. 10 washer onto a 6-32 x ½" bolt, push the bolt through both tubes, slide another no. 10 washer onto the bolt, and secure with a nut. Fasten all the pieces together in this way.

4. To create load-bearing braces, slide a piece of wood that's at least an inch thick underneath one of the topmost tubes. Trace an arc along the top half of the tube's interior onto the wood. Measure down two inches and draw another arc that connects to the first, making a crescent shape. Repeat for all the tubes on the top row.

5. Use a jigsaw to cut out crescents from wood, following the shapes you drew. Drill a hole into the center of each shape.

6. With a friend's help, position the tubes on your wall. Use a pencil to lightly trace the top arc on the wall, along the interior of each topmost tube. Set the tubes aside. Place a brace so it aligns with one of the drawn-on arcs, then stick a pencil through the brace's hole to make another small mark on the wall. Drill a hole in that spot, then tap in a plastic anchor until it's flush against the wall. Repeat with remaining braces.

7. Align the hole in one brace with the corresponding anchor. Using a drill with a Phillips-head bit, screw the brace to the wall. Repeat with remaining braces. Set the tubes onto the braces.

8. At the back of each supported tube, just above the brace, make a pilot hole with an awl. Fasten the tubes to the braces using ¾-inch screws.

Well, I have been working hard in my Bellissimo Jewelry studio getting ready for the up coming holiday shopping season. I hope it is a good one for all of us who own a small business! Let's decorating with them! Here are a few ideas that you can use to put your silver to use. Think outside the box, be creative and come up with a few ideas of your own!

Use small silver cups as vases.

Place fruit, round Christmas ornaments or grapevine balls on top of silver candlesticks to make a beautiful table scape.

Use silver teapots and creamers as vases.

Finally, use a silver tray to set off a collection of potted plants.

I love the cute Burlap bow on this one from Grata. Burlap is one of my favorite materials to use to decorate. It adds such a lovely texture and it is not expensive at all. Fray the ends of your burlap to give it a cute "fringe"

Outdoor Chandeliers

Chandeliers are for outdoors too! With the weather cooling down, it is time to open up the windows to let the fresh air in and invite friends over to enjoy the beautiful weather outside. I love the idea of adding a chandelier to outdoor living spaces. Whether it is illuminated with candles or electricity, they really add a nice touch to your space. When decorating your outdoor living area remember to treat it like an extension of your home and decorate it like you would a room in your house. I have been using my outdoor living space lately, enjoying the company of my neighbors and my hubby. Pass the iced tea please!

You can even make your own chandelier. These projects above will require a little dexterity with wire cutters and the needle-nosed pliers, but the end results are cool. Hang your fixture from a tree branch or porch roof for your next outdoor dinner party. Better still, fill your jars with soy citronella tealight candles (they burn cleaner) or add some drops of clove oil to the candles to keep the bugs at bay.

Recently I had the pleasure of writing a thank you note, and in the process I had the thought that, like letter writing, the practice of writing thank you notes may be a dying art. Let’s face it, most people don’t handwrite anything these days. We email, we text, we pick up our cellphones, we even Skype. We communicate in all kinds of ways, but we just aren’t handwriting much of anything anymore.

What I know for sure, is nothing can replace for me the simple pleasure of receiving a simple handwritten thank you note. And, in today’s noisy, electronic world, a thoughtful card, with a few lines of “thanks” handwritten inside, is a stand out symbol of caring and personal attention. If you are an artisan seller, include a short thank you note with every purchase you mail out. Your customers will love it!

Outdoor Fall Decor

Fall is the time when people move indoors and welcome guests to warm visits over cider. Greet your guests with a beautifully decorated front porch. I have put together a beautiful collection of beautiful and simple decorations for the outside of your home for fall. Using materials you may have in your yard or can pick up at the market, the outside of your home will look as warm and welcoming as it is inside!

Get some Mums! This is the time that most stores do away with the regular perennials and it becomes mum time. You'll be able to find pots of mums at the grocery store and home improvement stores. A few pots of mums go a long way in the porch decorating scheme of things. The mums can be an accent or a focal point.

Pumpkins and Gourds are the king of fall. They're also pretty cheap. Add some small pumpkins and a few large pumpkins for a splash of fall color. Put them at the base of your pots of mums and you've got a good start on a fall porch. Put them on the sides of your porch steps to direct folks to your front door.

A large porch can handle a couple of bales of hay. You can get three stack them up in a ragged pyramid with a top and two ledges on the side. Add your mums and pumpkins to your stack of hay and you've got a classic fall porch.

They really set the tone for the type of get together you are planning. These days, most people are sending emails to invite friends to a party. My new favorite thing to use it Paperless Post. You can email the cutest invitations! When your guests receive their invite via email an envelope will appear with their name on it. Do you ever feel like you sit down to start your project and your creative juices are just not flowing?? I know it happens to me in both my Interior Design Business and in my Jewelry Business. Personally, I just can't force creativity. Sometimes I just say "Ok, this is not working today" and I will try again tomorrow. I usually try to find something to refocus my energy. Occasionally I will go for a run and ideas will pop into my head. I think it is just a matter of not forcing the issue. If your creative juices are just not flowing, take a break, turn on some music, go for a walk, refocus your energy, take a breath and creative juices will start flowing again. Homecoming Mums

It is that time of year again. Football season has started and now it is time for the big Homecoming Game. And in Texas, homecoming mums are as big a deal as the game. The mum is the beautiful adornment (I use that term lightly) given to a girl by a special someone. She wears the mum during school on Friday and during the big game that night. The mums have gotten so elaborate. These days the bigger the better. I have even seen some girls wear a mum that is so heavy they can not pin it to their shirt they have to wear it around their neck! Yep, that must be a 10 pounder!

Mums are not cheap either, they can run up to $200 bucks! But, If you can staple and operate a glue gun, homecoming mums are so easy and fun to make. To make a homecoming mum, start out with a circular cardboard disc which you staple ribbon streamers to and build your "frame" for your mum. Then on the back of the disc start stapling streamers and trinkets. The more streamers the better!! Add, charms, sparkles, bells (the more noise the better), lights, or anything you can to simply make it "BIG". Then your last step is to hot glue your mum on and don't forget your bear. Here is the one I just finished making for my son. If you notice, I have left the last number off on the year. He hasn't found a date yet so I don't want to commit myself to anything just yet. This one ended up being 3 1/2 ft long. You can find a full step by step video here.

Heavenly is Vanessa's handcraft jewelry project that was born from the simple idea of designing pieces and collections with different inspirations and moods in mind. Every piece is thoughtfully created and has meaning and a story behind it. Here are some pieces from her Collections.

These earrings from the Daya Collection, are made with jade beads and brass. The Daya Collection is an amulet collection, entirely handmade and composed by three themes: Daya Tanah, Daya Laut and Daya Jiwa.

This ring from her La Rocca Collection is made with Swarovski Crystals and Copper. The La Rocca collection is divided in two ocasions: La Rocca Giorno and La Rocca Notte. This ring represents the collection, La Rocca Giorno.

The Creative Color, Violet

Violet brings a new dynamic to the expansion of blue and the activity of red. Red brings practicality to the undirected expansiveness of the blue, and allows more creative energy to emerge. For this reason, violet is associated with imagination and inspiration. Violet is uplifting and calms the mind and nerves. I knew there was a reason why I like the color Violet!

I love to feature my fellow artisans! I am always on the lookout for shops that sell beautiful handmade gifts. Do you have a shop and want to be featured on the Artisan Crafted Blog? Here's more info!

What kind of shops can be featured?

• items must be handmade by you

• items are of exceptional taste and execution

• the use of unique or interesting materials

Beautiful photographs are a must. Your photos must be:

• feature-ready, and a minimum of 450 pixels wide. Most times I can copy these from your shop.

• crisp, clear and showcase your items

• well-lit, free of flash spots and harsh shadows

• interestingly cropped, fun angles are a plus
